Boss Monster Game Review: A Game of Being a Dungeon Boss Monster

Arcadia is swarming with heroes and you, as a boss monster, are in charge of maintaining equilibrium by devouring the souls of these poor adventurers. Play as a boss and manage your dungeon in this card and strategy game Boss Monster.

Many have loved Boss Monster as a table-top card game. But with the collaboration of video game developer Plain Concepts, a digital version of Boss Monster was created to be played on mobile devices.

The game starts with selecting your boss monster which will be randomly chosen. You will then be given seven cards. Select two cards to discard and keep five cards in your hand as your starting card.

The game will start with your empty dungeon consisting of five empty slots and you, your boss monster, at the end of the dungeon. You and your opponents will place one monster or trap card in these slots per turn, starting with the slot nearest the boss monster. You and your opponent will have two rounds to prepare your dungeon before heroes start swarming in.

You can place a variety of monster or trap cards with various effects on your dungeon. There are two things to keep in mind when placing a card: its attacking power and its treasure. The monster or trap’s card attacking value determines how much damage it can deal when heroes pass by in that room. You have to build dungeons in a way that it can defeat heroes venturing inside your dungeon. If your dungeon’s total attacking power is too low, a hero will reach your boss monster and deal one wound. Get 5 wounds and your boss monster dies.

Another thing to keep in mind is the card’s treasure. Treasures attract heroes to enter your dungeon. Heroes such as thieves are attracted to gold sacks, warriors are to swords, wizards to magical books, and clerics to holy artifacts. If you have a variety of treasures, the more chance a hero will be allured to enter your dungeon.

In Boss Monster, it’s your task to build your dungeon in a way that it has sufficient attacking power to withstand heroes and with adequate treasures to attract heroes to enter your dungeon.

You can win the game in two ways: kill enough heroes and be the first one to gather ten souls, or if your opponent gets five wounds and dies before you do. So it's up to you what strategy to use. Build your dungeon to be more aggressive and get 10 souls before your opponent does, or be patient and wait for your opponent boss monsters to get struck down by heroes.

If you have filled all the 5 slots with monster or trap cards, your special boss monster skill will activate. Each boss monster has its own ability. The Draculord, for instance, shows you your opponent’s card in his hand and pick one card from it.

You can also cast spells in the game. There a variety of spell cards in the game such as casting a spell to make a hero more durable, making it pass through your opponent's dungeon, or cast a freezing spell to freeze a monster or trap card on your opponent's dungeon

Boss Monster graphics features an 8-bit style graphics and a classic background music which makes it feel you’re playing a classic RPG game. And I haven't encountered any issue while playing the game. The game ran smoothly and without any lag.

You can try playing Boss Monster for free with limited features. The free version features a limited selection of bosses and you get to play against one AI opponent only. But with the full version of the game, you get to play against three AI opponents or with other players online. You can also play locally with a friend through pass-and-play. The full version of Boss Monster can be unlocked within the game for about US$8.00.

Test your wits and strategic skills and become the best boss in Arcadia with Boss Monster.
