Magic Touch: Wizard for Hire Review: Popping Balloons to Defeat an Army of Knights

It's a bird. No, it's a plane. No, it's an army of knights attached to balloons attacking your castle. In the game Magic Touch: Wizard For Hire, you'll be defending your castle from knights using their best means of transportation—balloons.

Magic Touch: Wizard For Hire, a game created by Nitrome, is the successor of the flash game Magic Touch (you can try it here). Both versions have generally the same gameplay where you defend the castle from knights attached to balloons, but the newest version of the game—specifically designed for mobile devices—added spells, Play Games integration, integrated an in-game shop and sports a better graphics.

In the Magic Touch: Wizard For Hire, you are the hands and magic wand of the wizard. Your task will be to help the wizard pop the balloons attached on the knights, making them fall to their death. You can pop the balloons by drawing the symbols on each balloon on your device’s screen.

The game also supports multi-touch so you can use both thumbs to draw symbols and pop balloons at a faster rate.

There are 3 types of knight in the game. The first is the ordinary knight wearing a steel armor. This knight is commonly seen in the game. They carry single balloons with simple symbols. More balloons will be added while you progress in the game.

The next is the stocky knight with its violet armor. Watch out for this knight because they carry balloons with complicated symbols.

And the last is the golden knight. This knight carries the same symbols you find with the steel knight but carries 5 balloons at early game and more will be added in the later part of the game.

You earn points for every knight squashed. Knights will also drop coins which you can use to buy and unlock spells in the in-game shop.

The shop offers you a variety of spell which you can cast to help you defeat the floating knights. Spells doesn’t come cheap though and you have to save a plenty amount of coins. The most expensive spell is summoning a dragon which cost about 20,000 in-game coins. You can, however, convert your real money into game coins and unlock those spells right away. Other spells include slowing the time, casting a lighting, turning the knights into frogs, activate the tower's cannons and many more. You can also unlock 2 backgrounds in the shop.

The spells you unlocked will appear inside a bubble in the game and you can cast them by drawing its symbols. A bat or a gargoyle carrying a chest will also appear in the game. Open the chest by drawing multiple symbols and earn additional coins. Also, be on the lookout for balloons carrying a flask. This will grant you one random magic that can be cast anytime in the game.

Magic Touch: Wizard For Hire is a free game but has ads. Ads will pop-up sometimes filling out the whole screen and you need to tap the X button to go back to the game. Although ads-supported, ads doesn’t appear while you are in the middle of the game. You can remove the ads by paying about US$3.00.

Magic Touch: Wizard For Hire is a fun game and an effective time killer. It’s 8-bit design and sound effects gives a classical arcade touch in the game. Give it a try. You will love it.

I got a high score of 64 in the game. How well did your fare in the game?
