Crossy Road Game Review

When I was a kid, I loved playing the classic game Frogger. It’s an arcade game where you control a frog and guide it to its home, which is beyond the busy street and the river. So you’ll have to help the frog cross the road, avoid incoming vehicles, help it cross the river, and reach 1 of the 5 frog homes. Once done, the process repeats for next four frogs. Afterwards, the game restarts and proceeds to the next harder level.

Frogger was one of my favorite games at that time. Thankfully, I can relive that childhood experience with an Android game I found from the Google Play Store. It’s called Crossy Road by Yodo1 Games. The game is similar with Frogger but with a new gameplay, a variety of characters to choose from, and of course better graphics.

Crossy Road's game concept is similar to Frogger but in endless mode. You control a character and help it to safely cross through an endless course of busy roads and rivers. The further your character survives the higher your points.

The game ends if one of the following occurs to your character:
  • get hit by a car, truck, or train
  • when your character reaches the left or right sides of the screen while riding on the wooden platforms on the river
  • an eagle will snatch your character and feed it to its fledglings when your character is at the rear edge of the screen
  • when you jump in the water (no exemptions for aquatic characters)
Controls are simple. Just tap to make the character hop forward once and swipe right, left, or back to make the character hop once in that direction.

Crossy Road also allows you to unlock and use a variety of characters. You start as a Chicken in the game and you’ll unlock more characters as you play along. There are about 54 characters for you to unlock and play with.

Some characters can also add special effects on the game. I was able to unlock the Android Robot character and it added snow, turned the river into chocolate and transformed the trees into colorful sweets. You can also play as a wizard who zaps nearby trees or a dragon who breathes fire.

You can unlock a random character using 100 Games Coins via the Prize Machine. Game Coins are scattered around while you play so be sure to pick them up if you have the chance. You can also earn Game Coins from a gift given by the game or watching a sponsored video ad. If you can’t wait to unlock a character, you can always purchase any character for about a dollar each. Some characters are not available from the Prize Machine so you’ll have to purchase them to unlock them.

Speaking of ads, I commend Yodo1 Games for keeping Crossy Road ads free. You won't find any pesky ads while you're playing the game. Watching the sponsored video ads are optional but you’ll earn Game Coins if you do. The game is free and fully playable.

My overall game experience was amazing. The game's interesting gameplay, simple controls, a variety of characters, nice cartoony graphics, and cute animations make Crossy Road a fun and addicting Android game. If you were a fan of Frogger, then I highly recommend Crossy Road.

Go ahead and download Crossy Road from the Google Play Store.

And while you are playing, try to beat my high score of 190.
